September 2011 President's Letter

In 1960 Bryant Skinner began the development of the Deerwood community. The Skinner family had 50,000 acres from Regency to the Inter Coastal. The golf course followed and Jacksonville had the first gated community.

Over the years there were many owners of Deerwood. Mr Skinner sold it to AMACO of Texas which in turn sold to Stockton Whatley and Davin a Jacksonville real estate company. They sold to Gate Petroleum which then sold to it to the members in 1999. The new member club received the golf course, the play grounds, tennis courts and other properties.

At that time the Deerwood Improvement Association was formed. Before the sale to the members there never was a DIA. All assessments went to the sole owner and were used at his discretion.

Although the DIA is separate from the Country Club it was as mentioned above, formed as a result of the members owning the
Club. Therefore, it is important that we maintain a working relationship with the Country Club. Unknown to a lot of residents, all the golf course property is zoned for condos and zero lot homes.

For so many reasons it is important to support the Club and see that it does not fail. Your membership in one of the new Club programs should help. Without the Country Club, Deerwood would just be a housing community and values would drop significantly.

We appreciate your support!

Sincerely,
William Kight
